Yoman Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What are the minimum system requirements for Yoman?
A: Mac OS X Leopard, 10.5.x. on the machine running Yoman and on the machine using it as a client. iCal 3.x is required on the client (this is installed when OS X is installed.)

Q: What are the basic steps to installation?
A: 1. Drag the Yoman application to the Applications alias in the disk image.
2. In Applications, run Yoman. Yoman appears in the menu bar at the top of your screen as a calendar page representing April 12.
3. An activation window will appear with your Machine ID in it. Launch the YomanKeyGenerator from the disk image and paste your Machine ID into it. Click "Generate." Copy the Activation ID that is generated.
4. Paste that Activation ID into the Activation Window and click "OK." Yoman will want to relaunch.
5. Click on Yoman in the menu bar and make sure that the Yoman server is running. The menu will read "Stop Server" if the server is running. If it says "Start Server" please click on it.

Q: Great! I've got it installed! Now what do I do?
A: The next step is to set up a user account and put that user information into iCal.
1. Click on Yoman in the menu bar and Stop Server.
2. Click on Yoman in the menu bar and open Accounts Manager.
3. Click on an existing user account and press the Delete key to Delete the selected account, or click on the Plus at the lower left corner of the window to create a New Contact.
4. You may close the Accounts Manager window.
5. Click on Yoman in the menu bar and Start Server. This has the effect of having the server recognize that a new user was created.
6. Find your local IP address. Click on System Preferences, Sharing. Click on File Sharing. You do NOT need to activate File Sharing. The window will tell you something similar to "Other users can access your computer at afp://192.168.1.4/ or browse for "Jack Johnson's MacBook"." The information you care about is 192.168.1.4 - this is your local IP address.
7. Go to your client machine and launch iCal. Open iCal's preferences and click on Accounts.
8. Click on the plus at the bottom of the left column.
9. add a description, your username and password for your account.
10. Click on the disclosure triangle next to server options.
11. The account URL you need to enter is your local IP followed by :8008 or :8443. In the example above, it would be http://192.168.1.4:8008 or https://192.168.1.4:8443 - please use http or https as in the preceding example.
12. Now go and add this same information to another computer using iCal.

Any items added to one computer will appear on the other computer. Any modifications to one computer's calendar will appear on the other.

Q: I don't have 2 computers! Is this even useful to me?
A: Yes! If you use multiple Accounts defined in System Preferences, Accounts, this is useful to you. Suppose that you have seperate accounts and seperate cell phones that sync calendars, using Yoman will let you share calendars and be able to add to each other's calendars, so that you don't miss out on appointments.
